Brown

On November 13-14, 6 Dartmouth teams traveled to Providence, RI for the Brown tournament. Joe Huston '10 and Andrew Wansley '10 finished in-rounds with a perfect 5-0 record, but after a decisive victory in quarters, dropped in semis to finish as the 3rd place team. Joe was the 6th place varsity speaker, while Andrew finished 7th. Among our novices, Anuj Gupta '13 and Rachel Wang '13 had a breakout tournament; although they narrowly missed the novice break, their 3-2 record was impressive considering that both of their losses came against teams that made the varsity break. The other Dartmouth debaters who participated at Brown were Campbell Miller '12, Tim Goh '12, Richard Asala '13, Aditya Talwani, '13, Sahil Joshi, 13, and Ishita Kala, '13.

Northeastern

On November 6-7, Dartmouth Parli traveled to Boston, MA to compete in the Northeastern tournament. Northeastern is a "Pro-Am" style tournament, which means that each team was comprised of one varsity and one novice debater. This format gave our novices some valuable experience, as they were able to learn from their more seasoned partners. Andrew Wansley '10 and Anuj Gupta '13 had the most success of any Dartmouth pair, breaking and finishing in 12th place. Marcus Gadson '10 and Ishita Kala '13 had a strong tournament as well, just missing the break. Will Hix '12, Claire Kim '13, Jon Choi '11, Chris Kendig '10, Jacob Hickson '13, and Amy Zhang '13 also competed at Northeastern.

Tufts

On October 30-31, nine members of the Dartmouth Parli team spent part of their Halloween weekend in Medford, Ma for the Tufts tournament. This was arguably the team's most successful tournament of the year thus far, with two pairs breaking out of a field of nearly 80 teams. Tarang Agarwal '11 and Marcus Gadson '11 finished as the 7th place team, while Joe Huston '10 and Andrew Wansley '10 advanced to semi-finals, finishing 4th overall. Joe finished as the 4th place varsity speaker and Marcus finished 10th. Also competing at the tournament were Connor Beatty '10, Campbell Miller '12, Richard Asala '13, Aditya Talwani '13, and Jacob Hickson '13

Vassar

On October 16th-17th, Connor Beatty '10 & Tim Goh '12 and Jon Choi '11 & Chris Kendig '10 went to Vassar college for their annual debate tournament. Both pairs had solid tournaments and individually, Chris was the 7th novice speaker at the tournament.

Harvard

On October 9th-10th, Dartmouth sent a large contingent down to the Harvard tournament in Cambridge, MA. As in previous years, Harvard was one of the biggest and deepest tournaments of the year, with nearly 150 teams participating in the competition. Andrew Wansley '10 and Connor Beatty '10 went 4-1, earning a spot in octo-finals, where they lost to MIT. Marcus Gadson '10 and Tarang Agarwal '12 were also in the running for the break before dropping in a bubble round. Also in attendance at the tournament were Anuj Gupta '13, Ishita Kala '13, Jacob Hickson '13, Valentina Semenova '13, Claire Kim '13, Sahil Joshi '13, Adaitya Talwai '13, Richard Asala '13, Amy Zhang '13 and Rachael Wang '13. For most of our novices, this was their first collegiate tournament, so it was a great learning experience for them. Here are some pictures of the team!

Columbia

On October 2-3, Dartmouth sent 2 teams to NYC to compete in the Columbia tournament. Joe Huston '10 and Andrew Wansley '10 picked up right where they left off last spring, going 4-1 and breaking to quarters. Joe was the 9th varsity speaker at the tournament. Attending their first tournament were Paul Finkelstein'13 and Anuj Gupta '13. They were among one of the stronger novice pairs at the tournament, with Paul earning 7th place novice speaker.

Smith

This past weekend, Marcus Gadson '10, Connor Beatty '10 and Tim Goh '12 traveled to Smith College to compete in the Dartmouth Parli Team's first tournament of the year. Tim and his partner, Allegra Pincus of Brown, had an impressive tournament. They went 4-1, missing the break on a tie-breaker, and finished in 9th place overall. Marcus and Connor were in contention for the break as well, winning 3 of their first 4 rounds before dropping round 5 to a Brandeis pair that went on to finish in 2nd place at the tournament.

The team will spend this upcoming weekend training the incoming novice class, before traveling to Columbia in two weeks.

7th PLACE AT NATIONALS!

From the 24th to the 26th, two Dartmouth teams, Joe Huston and Andrew Wansley and Tarang Agarwal and E McNeil, competed at the AMerican Parliamentary Debate National Tournament hosted by Mount Holyoke College.
Joe and Andrew emerged as the 7th place team, making it all the way to quarterfinals.
Teams qualifying to the Nationals tournament had to consistently break to out-rounds throughout the year in order to fill the quota of points needed for an invitation to the tournament.
This achievement was the culminating experience for Joe's and Andrew's 5-tournament break record.
Tarang Agarwal and E McNeil also performed well at the tournament.

The Varsity team of Joe Huston and Andrew Wansley WON the Amherst College Tournament this past weekend on April 17-18. This win brought their break streak up to five tournaments straight. Joe Huston was also the 6th Varsity speaker.
The two have been practicing all spring term for the Nationals tournament which will take place the coming weekend.

Williams

Dartmouth Parli travelled to Williams on the weekend of April 10-11. Joe Huston and Andrew Wansley broke again and emerged as the 5th Varsity team. Andrew Wansley was the 2nd Varsity Speaker and Joe Huston was the 6th Varsity Speaker. Ryan Zehner was the 4th Novice Speaker, and he with his partner, Will Hix, emerged at the 2nd Novice team.

Clark

The Clark University tournament on the weekend of April 4th-5th inaugurated the Spring season for Dartmouth Parliamentary Debate. Joe Huston and Andrew Wansley continued their good streak and emerged as the 3rd Varsity team. Joe Huston was 10th Varsity Speaker and Prat Srivastava was 5th Novice Speaker.

Stanford

On the weekend of March 6th and 7th, Dartmouth Parliamentary Debate flew cross-country and competed in the annual Stanford Tournament. Apart from have a wonderful trip, the team brought home many awards. Andrew Wansley, who was currently on an off-term in Northern California, teamed with Joe Huston to emerge as the 7th Varsity team. Andrew was awarded the title of 1st Speaker and Joe, the 3rd Speaker. Campbell Miller and Tim Goh were the fourth Novice team. Other teams that competed were Tarang Agarwal and Connor Beatty, and Prat Srivastava and Maryam Zafer.

Boston University

On February 20th and 21st, Dartmouth drove down to the Boston University tournament. If you remember, the last time Dartmouth was at BU was for the Novice Tournament. Unlike the mildly confused and nervous debaters they were during fall term, the novices were now seasoned and prepared. Tim Goh showed the largest improvement from his fall term showing at BU with his break to Novice Finals. Tim had hybrided with Lucas Li from Brown University and after a brilliant debate against Yale in Semi-Finals, the team took 2nd place in the entire Novice division, dropping to a team from University of Chicago.
The other Dartmouth teams at the tournament were Joe Huston and Connor Beatty, Nathan Gusdorf and Maryam Zafer, and Carsten Hansen and David Silver. Prat Srivastava judged.

Brandeis

North American Debate Championships

On January 23rd and 24th, Joe Huston paired with Tarang Agarwal and Connor Beatty paired with William Hix drove to Amherst College to attend the NorthAms tournament. Both teams did incredibly well. Joe and Tarang emerged with a 4-2 record and were the 17th team at the tournament. Connor and Will left with a 3-3 record.

Dartmouth Winter Tournament

After a long hiatus, the Dartmouth Parliamentary Debate Blog resumes and recounts all the tournaments from winter term.

On the weekend of January 16th and 17th, the hosted our own tournament at Dartmouth. Schools came from all over the Northeast making the pool close to 50 teams overall. The experience was great for Dartmouth Novices who judged at a tournament for the first time. The tournament's highlights were the social hosted by the SAE fraternity, Moose trophies, the Mai Tai banquet, and the finals round won by Yale's Grant May and Pam Brown.

On Halloween weekend, Dartmouth Parli sent teams to both the Wesleyan tournament in Connecticut and the Brown tournament in Rhode Island.
Sourabh Mishra and Marcus Gadson placed as the 4th Varsity team and Pratyaksh Srivastava and Maryam Zafer came in as the 2nd Novice team. The other teams Tim Goh and Jen Gaudette and David Lumbert and Jingna Zhou left the tournament with great records. Prat Srivastava also placed as the 2nd Novice speaker and Tim Goh took 3rd place.

The Brown teams ,Tarang Agarwal and E McNeil and Andrew Wansley and Joe Huston, both went 3-2 at Brown. They had great records despite facing a large and competitive pool.

Cornell

The Dartmouth Parliamentary Debate team drove 300 miles to attend the Cornell tournament on Novermber 14th and 15h. All the teams met with a lot of success as Shan Shan He and Rohan Chaudhary placed as the 3rd Novice team. Marcus Gadson and Jen Gaudette went into the semi-final round as the top seeds with a 5-0 record. They emerged as the 3rd Varsity team. E McNeill was awarded the 6th Varsity speaker award, Tarang Agarwal the 8th and Marcus Gadson the 9th.

On the weekend of November 7th and 8th, Dartmouth teams headed to Boston to take part in the Tufts tournament. This tournament had a unique setup because it mandated that novice debaters pair up with varsity team members. Andrew Wansley, paired with Will Hix, said, "Novice and Varsity members had a great time debating at Tufts. Wonderful rounds and great experiences all around."

Yale IV

On October 24th, Dartmouth Parliamentary Debate took four teams on a slow, scenic drive down to New Haven to compete in the only British Parliamentary Debate tournament offered in America. The Yale IV tournament attracted teams from all over the broad American Northeast, Canada, and Australia. The Dartmouth team participates on the APDA circuit, but had no barrier in transitioning to a British style of debate. Although no Dartmouth team broke, Sourabh Mishra and Marcus Gadson finished two places out of the break by coming in 18th. To further Dartmouth's success, Prat Srivastava placed as the 7th novice speaker. Campbell Miller paired with Tarang Agarwal, Jen Gaudette with Prat, and Carsten Hansen with Maryam Zafer.

As a brief description, British Parliamentary debate differs from the American style in that it incorporates four teams competing in hour long rounds, preparation time for a resolution unseen by both teams until ten minutes before a round, and a wider variety of accents.

Boston University Novice Tournament

On October 3rd and 4th, the Boston University Novice Tournament was the first to see the incredible potential of nine Dartmouth novice teams (one team was Brown-Dartmouth hybrid). Will Hix and Ryan Zehner broke to quarter-finals with a 4-0. Both also won recognition for their speaking abilities, with Will taking home the top speaker trophy and Ryan the 8th speaker award. Dartmouth had four teams-- Prat Srivastava and Campbell Miller, Natalie Burkhard and Tim Guo, ShanShan He and the Brown debater, Rohan Chaudhary and Maryam Zafer--with 3-1 records. Other teams included Carsten Hansen and Alex Lucey, Yand Wei and Jingna Zhou, David Silver and David Lumbert, Erich Hartfelder and Jeremey Kauffman. All the novice teams gained Dartmouth immense respect with the quality of their cases, arguments, and speaking skills. With more training from the great varsity members, the Dartmouth '12s will be fierce competition.

Although most of the team was busy with finals the past few weeks, a few debaters were able to find the time to compete each of the past two weekends. On February 29^th-March 1^st, Joe Huston ’10 and Andrew Wansley ’10 went down to Boston to compete in the Boston University tournament. Joe and Andrew compiled a 4-1 record, but finished just outside the break.

On March 7^th and 8^th, Sourabh Mishra ’10 and Marcus Gadson ’10, along with Tarang Agarwal ’11 (who debated with James Shapiro of Brown) made a cross-country trip to the Stanford Debate Tournament. For the first time in his last three competitions, Tarang did not make it to novice finals. That’s because he made the varsity break, going 4-1 on his way to a 3^rd place varsity finish. Additionally, Tarang and James were the top novice team at the tournament. Sourabh and Marcus also went 4-1, finishing as the 4^th place pair

Northeastern Results

On February22-23, four Dartmouth teams braved the snow on their way to Boston, where they competed in the Northeastern debate tournament. The team had a strong tournament all around, with three of the four pairs making it to bubble rounds. Although no one made the break, several Dartmouth debaters brought trophies back with them to Hanover. Just a week after competing in her first ever debate tournament, Jen Gaudette '10 teamed with Connor Beatty '10 to finish as the 10th varsity team. Reyad Allie '11 and Tarang Agarwal '11 earned their second straight appearance in novice finals, where they defeated a Brandise pair to finish as the top novice team. Tarang also finished as the 4th novice speaker.

On February 15-16, the Dartmouth Parliamentary Debate team traveled to Amherst, Ma to compete at the Amherst debate tournament. Andrew Wansley ’10 had an impressive tournament, teaming with Steven Kryger of Yale to finish as the 4^th place team. Additionally, he received 10^th varsity speaker. Amherst was also a breakout tournament for several of our novices. Three Dartmouth novices were among the top 10 novice speakers, including E McNeill (2^nd), Reyad Allie (3^rd), and Tarang Agarwal. Tarang and Reyad also finished as the 2^nd novice team.

NYU Results

On February 1-2, four Dartmouth teams went down to New York City to compete in the NYU tournament. NYU hosted one of the largest tournaments of the year, with exactly 100 teams competing for only 8 break round spots. Two Dartmouth pairs, Joe Huston '10 and Marcus Gadson '10 as well as E McNeill '11 and Jonathan Choi '11, both got off to impressive 3-1 starts before each falling in round 5 to teams that made the break. E and Choi ended up as the 8th novice team at the tournament.

On January 18-19, the Dartmouth Parliamentary Debate team traveled to Bates College for the first competition of Winter Term. Bolstered by the return of several teammates who were off last term, Dartmouth was able to field several experienced teams for the tournament. As a result, 3 Dartmouth teams finished in the top ten, with Kevin Karp ’10 and Marcus Gadson ’10 finishing in 5^th place, Andrew Wansley ’10 and Joe Huston ’10 in 7^th place, and Sourabh Mishra ‘10 and Connor Beatty ’10 in 10^th. For individual speakers, Andrew Wansley placed 8^th.

The Dartmouth Winter Invitational

On January 11-12, the Dartmouth Parli team started off winter term by hosting the Dartmouth Winter Invitational tournament. Despite the fact that many schools were still on winter break, we had a great turnout with 46 teams from across the country making the trip up to Hanover. After 5 competitive in-rounds, and some very close decisions in out-rounds, in the end it was Aram Boghosian and Rob Silverblatt of Tufts defeating Chris Baia and Mike Childers of Johns Hopkins in the final round. Rocky Lotito of BU was the top speaker at the tournament.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this tournament a success. We hope that everyone who came enjoyed their time at Dartmouth and we hope to see you back for our tournament next year.

Dartmouth Wins Tufts!

On November 9th and 10th, three Dartmouth teams participated in the Tufts University debate tournament. Tufts was a "Pro-Am" which means that each team was comprised of one varsity debater and one novice debater. This format gave our less seasoned team members some great experience and it also made for a very competitive tournament. The team of Andrew Wansley '10 and Mostafa Heddaya '11 emerged from the pack with a 4-1 record. The pair then won a string of impressive victories in out rounds to make it to the final round, where they defeated a very strong Yale team to take home first place. Andrew also earned the 3rd place varsity speaker award. With their victory, both Andrew and Mostafa have now qualified for Nationals, which takes place in the spring.

The Parliamentary Debate team is currently preparing to host the Dartmouth Winter Invitational tournament which will take place January 11-12.

Cornell Results

On November 2nd-3rd, four Dartmouth debaters made the long trip to Ithaca, NY to compete in the Cornell Parliamentary debate tournament. Both Dartmouth pairs got off to a great start, each going 3-0 in their rounds on Friday. Unfortunately, neither team could carry that success into day two and both finished with a 3-2 record. However, it should be noted that neither pair lost a round to a team that finished worse than 6^th overall. Additionally, Dartmouth debaters brought several awards back with them to Hanover. Connor Beatty and Ben Lo took home 8^th place team, with Connor and Ben finishing as the 7^th and 9^th speaker, respectively. Edward “E” McNeill also won the 3^rd place novice speaker award.

Oh, Canada!

On Saturday, October 27th, while the other half of the Parliamentary Debate team was competing at Yale, four Dartmouth debaters ventured north of the boarder to compete in the Bishop's University Invitational tournament in Sherbrooke, Quebec. This tournament provided the Dartmouth squad with a unique opportunity to compete in an international tournament, without having to travel too far from Hanover. Unlike most tournaments, the Bishops Invitational was more of an individual tournament, with debaters switching partners each round and judges counting speaker points for each debater rather than wins and losses. Then, after three rounds the top 8 speakers were paired up and debated against each other until there was only one team left standing.

The Dartmouth debaters were able to adjust to the different style of debate, and had a very successful tournament. Ben Lo '10, Connor Beatty '10, and Sourabh Mishra '10 all finished in the top 8 speakers, placing 2nd, 4th and 7th, respectively with Austen Zheng '10 narrowly missing the cut. Connor and his partner Mike from Bishop's University finished the tournament in 1st place, with Sourabh's team placing 2nd and Ben's team placing 3rd.

Yale IV

On October 26-27, four members of the Dartmouth Parli team traveled to New Haven, CT for the Yale IV debate tournament. The Yale tournament is unique, in that it is the only British Parliamentary (BP) style tournament on the APDA schedule. As a result, the Yale tournament attracts many of the top teams from both the US and Canada.

Andrew Wansley '10 and Jonathan Choi '11 had a strong tournament, finishing 19th out of the 112 team field. Jonathan also finished 10th among novice speakers.

On October 12-13, the Dartmouth Parliamentary Debate team attended two tournaments. The team split up, sending three teams to Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island and three teams to Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY.

The field at Brown was deep and talented, with many of the top debaters in the north-east in attendance. Despite the stiff competition, the Dartmouth squad had a strong showing, led by Andrew Wansley '10 and Ben Lo '10 who complied a 4-1 record. Andrew and Ben broke to quarterfinals, where they earned another impressive victory on their way to a 4th place finish at the tournament. The Brown tournament also provided an opportunity for novices Danny Kim '11, Zack Stolzenberg '11, Jorden Osterman '11, and Austin Zheng '10 to gain some valuable debating experience.

The other half of the team also had a successful weekend. At Vassar, Sourabh Mishra '10 and Connor Beatty '10 got off to a strong start before finishing with a 3-2 record, which was good for 5th place overall at the tournament. Novices Tarang Agarwal '11 and Jason Lester '11 placed 3rd among novice teams, with Tarang taking home 2nd place novice speaker. Reyad Allie '11 and Michael Marcusa '11 also had a solid tournament, considering their three losses came against the top three teams at the tournament.

The team did not attend any tournaments last weekend, as it was homecoming here at Dartmouth. However, we are in the midst of an in-house tournament, which has been a fun way to improve and prepare for upcoming competitions.

Harvard University Parliamentary Debate Tournament Results

On the days of October 5 and 6, the Dartmouth Parliamentary Debate Team participated in the Harvard Parliamentary Debate Tournament in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

This was the first Parliamentary Debate Tournament for many novices on our team and gave them a chance to understand the complexities of Parliamentary Debate. This was also the first Tournament of the year for the Varsity members of our team.

Overall, our team was very successful at Harvard. Andrew Wansley '10 and Edward McNeill '11 had an impressive record of 4 wins and 1 loss and Sourabh Mishra '10 and Austin Zheng '10 rallied to a 3 win and 2 loss record. No Dartmouth team finished worse than a 2 win and 3 loss record-- an impressive feat recognizing that many of the teams were at their first tournament.

This week, we will be traveling to Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island for their annual Debate Tournament. The results will be posted next week in this same forum.

Demo Debate for '11s

For all Dartmouth '11s and potential novices:

We are having a demo debate on September 25th (Tuesday) at 3pm in Rocky 1.

The topic for this debate will be "The United States should repeal the 5th Amendment protection against self-incrimination.

This debate is for our potential debate team members to learn the Parliamentary Debate style and also for just some great entertainment the night before classes begin. We will also be announcing the time and location of our meeting on Wednesday at this demo debate. This meeting on Wednesday will be to introduce novices to the Debate Team and get them ready for their first tournament in their APDA Debate careers. The weekend of the 28th and 29th will be an all novice tournament at Boston University. We hope that by coming to our demo debate on Tuesday and then joining us for our meeting on Wednesday, we will be able to accommodate all our novices for the Tournament at Boston University.
